Wigan Job

Wigan is part of Greater Manchester and stands on the River Douglas. The borough has a population of over 300,000  and is 17.5 miles from Liverpool and 16.5 miles from Manchester, making it ideally situated in the commuter belt.

Wigan has particularly high rates of employment in retail and manufacturing. It is also well represented in health and social work, as well as property and business services.

The area around Wigan pier is currently under development, with plans to include cafes, shops, a hotel and apartments. This will bring in new business and greater employment opportunities over the coming years and create a thriving commercial hub for the town.  New shopping centres, a swimming pool and central library are also in the pipeline.
Wigan is home to many large businesses that provide jobs in and around the town. The Tote chain of bookmakers is based in Wigan, providing approximately 300 jobs.  JJB Sports was founded in Wigan and Giro Bank also has its headquarters there.

Wigan sits on the meeting point of two major roads, the A577 and A49, which also join the main motorways. This means it will always be an economic centre with increasing retail development now bearing this out. Two railway stations provide express trains to London and all major UK cities and buses also link to surrounding towns.  Such excellent transport systems have created a thriving business centre with excellent employment opportunities in several sectors.
