Lancashire is home to some 1.5 million people and attracts some of the most innovative companies in England due to its high quality of living and good business infrastructure. It is one of the most populous areas of England after London and the Southeast and home to more than 45,700 enterprises employing more than half a million of people. The county is rich in history and emerged during the industrial revolution where it was established as a major commercial and industrial region.
Once the world centre for cotton production, Lancashire still retains some of its former influence in the textile industry but the county has also welcomed a thriving service industry, especially the commercial, business and technical services. The largest private industry in Lancashire is the defense industry with BAE Systems Military Air Solutions division based in Warton on the Fylde coast. The nuclear power industry also has a major presence in the county and together with a large retail and commercial sector; the county is in constant need for good sales personnel.
The region is attractive not only due to its sound economic environment but also because of its excellent education facilities, which makes it an ideal choice for families with children of all ages. The country has four state grammar schools as well as a number of private school. Not less than four universities service the county, Lancaster University, University of Central Lancashire, Edge Hill University and the Lancaster campus of The University of Cumbria. There are also seven colleges, which offer higher education courses.
